Migingo is a rocky island in the waters of Lake Victoria, Africa. While small, the island is densely populated with fishermen from Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania living there, but there was no active church until Otieno started a home fellowship. When he needed Bibles to share with the people of Migingo, FMI was delighted to provide many to him.
Soon, Otieno’s home fellowship got to the size where the congregation needed a larger, dedicated gathering place. The only available space to build a church site was by the shore, and local officials gave permission to build there, but a gigantic rock was obstructing construction. The fellowship did not have enough money to either relate or smash the big sized rock into moveable chunks. During a corporate Bible reading from Matthew 17:20-21, Otieno recently shared that our faith can move mountains. The people loved the analogy and started praying for the Lord to do that very thing so that they could move forward with church construction.
After days of praying, a powerful storm hit the island and destroyed its old fishing pier. The local officials determined a better site for rebuilding the pier, but they needed some crushed stone for making concrete for its construction. Municipal authorities directed that they very rock which obstructed the congregation from building their meeting place to be removed and crushed for the new pier and underwrote the costs. God worked in an amazing way to answer the congregation’s prayers of faith. Miningo now has its first church site AND a new fishing pier!
So far this year, FMI’s partners in Kenya have distributed thousands of Bibles in four different languages. Like the folks of Mingingo Island, many Kenyans got to experience reading and studying the Living Word in their own mother tongue for the very first time. AS a result, hundreds of people have placed their trust in Jesus Christ for salvation and thousands of others can now be more easily discipled.
