Defy Expectations

Driving a truck and reading the Bible are just a few of the ways Kauser defies expectations in her ultra-restrictive society.

Women in the tribal Pashtun culture of Pakistan are “only to supposed to stay at home, get married, and lead a domestic life,” the 40-year-old woman sighs. Here, even a walk to the market for groceries requires that a male member of the family – a husband, father, brother, or uncle – accompany the female. “But I have set my sights higher,” she explains. “I want to help improve my society.” Kausar began her daring journey by getting her university degree in education so she could teach and influence the next generation. But after her husband became disabled when his hands were severely injured in an accident, she needed to find a way to become the sole breadwinner and provide for her family.

The gift of a Bible from Aabdar (left) to Kausar (right, in white mask, driving a truck with a steering wheel on the right) helped her learn how much Jesus values women.

Eventually, two significant events brought light, energy, and purpose to Kauser’s existence. The first occurred when she got a government job as a community health supervisor. The second happened when Aabdar, one of FMI’s disciple-making partners in Pakistan met her and introduced her to the Injil – the New Testament. “I was amazed as I came to understand how Jesus delights to show mercy and love toward women and give them equal value as men,” Kauser reports excitedly. “Immediately I started following Jesus as my Lord and ultimate caregiver.”

Getting around the town for her health supervision duties was still a challenge for Kauser, so she decided to drive a small pick-up truck. Some people in the community were displeased that Kauser would be so bold or shameless as to learn how to drive.  But since coming to know Jesus Christ, Kausar has experienced new joy, confidence, and peace.

Encouraged by Aabdar, Kauser began leading Bible study classes for women in private homes. Since many women in her area are illiterate, she reads the Injil aloud to her students and tells them about the life-giving hope Jesus offers them. “It’s been six years now that I have been teaching women privately. I am also involved in a women’s skills training center that provides sewing classes. Here, I can share some basic education with the women and youth and, most importantly, I can share the good news about Jesus.”

Your indispensable support, offered through prayers and financial contributions, has empowered partners like Aabdar to bring hope and profound positive changes to individuals like Kausar as they serve in spiritually challenging environments. Thank you for your crucial role in this ministry of sharing the gospel which transforms hearts and brings courage to impact societies.
